Pismo Beach Pier The pier was originally built in 1881 by a group of San Francisco business men, and was primarily used as a shipping point for south county agriculture. After sustaining major damage from storms in 1983, the current pier was rebuilt in 1924 and boasts 1,370 feet of boardwalk as well as several cantilevered fishing decks. Many fishing and clamming opportunities are available from the pier. Restrooms and free parking are available at the foot of the pier as well fish-cleaning stations, benches, lights, bait (primarily frozen) and tackle. San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo is a Catholic mission that was founded in the late 18th century. It was originally constructed in Monterey, and was relocated to Carmel. It was the second of the 21 missions built in Alta California. Visitors are able to look through various aspects of the mission, including the burial places of Padres Junipero Serra, Juan Crespi and Fermin Lasuen, who were among the men who founded the mission.
